Barcelona City Council stand hosts presentation of Basque Pelota World Championships to be held in Barcelona next October

Event attended by twice world champion pelota player Emiliano Skufca

Barcelona will host the 18th edition of the Basque Pelota World Championships from 14 to 20 October 2018. Over this seven-day period, the Vall d’Hebron Olympic and Bac de Roda municipal frontons will bring together more than 300 players from 14 countries, the world’s best Basque pelota players. One of these is twice world champion Emiliano Skufca, from Argentina but a resident of Barcelona, who was present today at the Barcelona City Council stand in the village at the Banc Sabadell Barcelona Open – Conde De Godó Trophy, where the Basque Pelota World Championships were presented.

The event was attended by Marta Carranza, sports commissioner of the Barcelona City Council; Santi Siquier, territorial representative for Sport in Barcelona of the Catalan Government’s general secretariat of sport; Daniel Laga, sports representative of the Barcelona Provincial Council; Agustí Brugués, president of the Catalan Federation of Basque Pelota (FCP); Pere Alcober, advisor to the World Championships, and Carles Bartolomé, executive director of the event.

Marta Carranza highlighted: “Barcelona will once again take to the world stage with a sports event. These World Championships are also a great opportunity to promote the sport of Basque pelota.”

For his part, the twice world and world cup champion Emiliano Skufca was delighted because: “Barcelona is my home and I am convinced that these World Championships will be very special. The quality will be superb and they will provide a perfect opportunity to strengthen the sport. I will do my very best to win in Barcelona.”
