Barcelona, world capital of sport

The pairing of Barcelona and sport first arose in 1992, when the city hosted what Joan Antoni Samaranch called “the best Olympic Games in history”. Since that time, the Catalan capital has not only carved its name on the world map, but has also confirmed its organisational capacity and enormous interest in sport. Barcelona is already today a world capital of sport.

And it was precisely sport that put Barcelona in the spotlight for many visitors. Flanked by the sea and the mountains, Barcelona is indeed worth a visit. Modern and cosmopolitan, it is an open and welcoming city that cries out to be visited, with hidden gems in every corner and brimming with Mediterranean culture and tradition.

Iconic facilities of CEM Vall d’Hebron Olympic frontons

Barcelona has some magnificent sports facilities for this major international Basque Pelota event. The Vall d’Hebron frontons were built to host the Pelota competition in the exhibition sport category for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.

These facilities have recently been refurbished to adapt to current regulations and to be able to host a sports event of the magnitude of a world championship. This remodelling will be part of the legacy of these World Championships.

The CEM Vall d’Hebron Olympic frontons will be the main venue for almost the entire competition, with some matches in the qualifying phase to be played at the Bac de Roda frontons.
